hello world

thots is a blog about building software and being an engineer. the decisions, the tradeoffs, the 3am pages, the things i had to learn the hard way. but there’s more to life than just engineering so i’ll probably also write about life in general.

to that end, the first thing i’ll talk about is how crazy it is that everyone’s path in life is different. my best friends today, we all grew up together in the same communities, but all throughout life, different decisions compounded in different ways for all of us. sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worst.

recently i grabbed pizza with my two best friends. it’s weird that while i can say without a shadow of a doubt that they’re my best friends, i only really see them a handful of times per year, even though we’re all within 45 minutes of each other. during dinner, we talked a ton about just how tough life is in general. all the demands. all the needs. certainly all the wants. as we talked, what became clear is that the grass is always greener, no matter which side you’re on.

i’ve been in positions where i’ve hated my current job, chose to pursue another opportunity just to get away, only to find i also hate the new job. life, and definitely the perception of life, is similar.
